General Guidelines for Weddings

General Guidelines

  • All weddings at Hope UMC are officiated by one of our pastors, including counseling, rehearsal, and ceremony. Including clergy outside of Hope to assist with the wedding is at the discretion of the officiating pastor.
  • Weddings should be scheduled at least four (4) months in advance to allow for the counseling process.
  • Premarital counseling is required and should be arranged by the bride and groom as soon as possible after the wedding date is confirmed. A pastor of Hope will counsel and guide in the preparation of the service. Counseling may include reading books/articles about marriage, two or more counseling sessions, and completion of a pre-marital questionnaire.
  • All weddings will be rehearsed. The evening before the wedding is generally the best time to schedule the rehearsal. However, activities on the church calendar will determine the day and time of the rehearsal.
  • The church’s wedding coordinator will be used for all weddings.
  • The church organist will be used for all weddings. In the event that the church organist is not available, a replacement approved by the organist will be secured.
  • The pastor and church organist approve all music for the ceremony.
  • Three hours of sanctuary time is allotted for weddings. This allows time for flower delivery, altar set-up, photographs, and clean up. On Saturdays, the church must be cleared by 3:00 pm. On Sundays, the church is available from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
  • Flash photography during the ceremony is not allowed. Flash photography during the processional and recessional is allowed.
  • The photographer may go through the Asbury Room to make pictures during the ceremony. He/She may not enter the chancel area during the ceremony.
  • An audio taped recording of the wedding will be provided. Additional copies of the CD will be provided if requested. Any special audio requirements, such as additional microphones, must be negotiated with audio personnel.
  • Vocalists, scripture/poem readers, instrumentalists should attend the rehearsal to arrange sound levels and positioning.
  • The wedding coordinator will make the initial contact with the organist, audio technician, and altar committee chairperson. Follow-up with the organist is the responsibility of the bride/groom.
  • The use of alcoholic beverages on church grounds is prohibited.
