Prayers and Squares

Prayers & Squares is a ministry which combines the gift of a hand-tied quilt with the gift of prayer for someone in need. Each knot tied into the quilt represents a prayer that was offered specifically for the recipient of the quilt. Approximately 15 - 20 quilters from the local Prayers and Squares chapters gather twice a month in Covenant Hall for prayer, to learn new patterns and techniques, and to share quilts made since their last meeting.

Requests come in from members of Hope UMC for prayer quilts for family, friends and coworkers in need of support. Hope's quilters fashion the quilts and then meet on Saturday mornings to add ties into the prayer quilts and prepare them for the Saturday and Sunday worship services. At these services, the quilts are displayed in the Sanctuary and the pastors inform the congregation of the needs of the designated recipients. As the congregation files from the Sanctuary, they pause by the quilts and pray as they tie a knot. Quilts are then delivered to the person or persons for which they have been crafted, full of the well wishes and prayers of the Hope congregations.  The prayer square above was sent to Jody and is traveling with her to Iraq in Nov. 2007.
