Rev. Brian Kent, Senior Pastor

I have spent most of my life near the I-15 corridor. When I was in the eighth grade, my family moved from Colorado to Escondido, California. I played drums and percussion in the Orange Glen High School band in the days that they were good, when there was no Rancho Bernardo High School and when Poway HS Band had about 17 members in uniforms that looked like green pajamas. My how times have changed. I really look forward to watching some superlative bands.

I was a geology major at Palomar and a music major at SDSU, and finally landed as a Biblical Language and Literature major at what is now called Point Loma Nazarene University. There I met the love of my life, Lorena. We have been married for over 31 years. Our children are Jeremy (30), who works in Poway and Jennifer (27) who works now in Pasadena but is seeking work as a missionary.

Point Loma Nazarene University is a very conservative place. Lorena and I were considered liberals at PLNC. We traveled up to Berkeley to Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union, a very liberal place where Lorena and I were considered conservative. I loved both places and found real live dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ in both settings.

Our churches (in the last 31 years):
San Carlos UMC as a Youth Director before Seminary,
Chula Vista 1st UMC as Education Director and Associate Pastor (ordained 1983),
Linda Vista UMC.
As UM missionaries we started a United Methodist Church in Ulyanovsk, Russia.
Murrieta UMC
Aldersgate UMC in Tustin
Riverside First UMC, where I have served for the last 7 years.
…and now: Hope UMC in Rancho Bernardo (for the next 13-18 years, the good Lord and the Bishop willing.)

I have a great deal of peace about working together with you in God’s Kingdom.

In Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian Kent
